“Hey Dave! Which is better: a Cadillac or an Audi A6?”
“Should I buy a Lexus SUV for my wife?”
I get variations of these questions all the time. And I honestly have trouble giving a quick answer. Really, we need to find out more about the history of the each car before we can judge.
My quick “answers” commonly are more follow up questions:
– How many owners has it had?
– Does it have original paint?
– Who owned it, and where was it serviced?
For some people the Audi A6 might be a better car. Especially in the Midwest (AWD). But keep in mind, Cadillac also incorporates a very decent AWD system on many of their vehicles. Regardless, I would be doing you a disservice to recommend you buy any car if it had six previous owners, was a dealer loaner (rental vehicle), and if the whole right side of the car had been repainted. There’s only so much I can tell virtually about that Lexus you’re looking at.
“BUT IT HAD NAVIGATION …”
Similarly, when I ask people about their recent car purchase I hear:
“It was blue and had navigation. I really wanted the nav package. And it only had 13,000 miles! They had it pretty aggressively priced.”
All these situations have one thing in common: people commonly buy cars based on color, options, and comparison of mileage and price.
Me? I buy based on history, number of owners, the ability to document where the car has been, and original paint.
So do yourself a favor, and try to forgo the urge to buy based on what you can see (or the color your husband happens to prefer). Buy the car after you’ve discovered what you can’t see.
